Online Dating Scam

The Internet Crime Complaint Center receives numerous complaints about an Online Dating Scam.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation are warning people of yet another online scam.

At some point during August the center issued warnings about a PC virus that could actually put a home computer out of commission until such times as the injured party made a payment via the Internet. This sophisticated ransomware could have enabled the scammers to collect financial and personal information.

Now the Internet Crime Complaint Center have been investigating an online scam that lures people into taking part in confidential online conversation. During these online sessions people exchanged messages, personal information and explicit photographs. After exchanging this information they were then sent a text message stating that their details had been posted on the Internet.

The photographs, conversation transcripts and telephone numbers were then posted onto a website. The victims were sent a link that took them directly to the site where they had the opportunity to buy their information back. Buying back their conversation would cost them $9 whereas buying back all of their personal details could cost them as much as $99.

The warning fails to state just how many unsuspecting people have been duped by the latest dating scam. It is not yet clear whether the personal info is still on line or not.

Many people who create an online dating scam claim to reside in the USA or at least state that they work abroad, in reality the scammers often reside overseas.

People who scam are clever and they target females that are disabled, divorced, over forty or widowed. The women are usually lured by the well constructed profiles that appear on the site.
